Dunes takes a close-up view of the mesmerizing patterns that form in sand when the tide goes out. The ripples show the graceful natural topography in their shadowy and oscillating curves. Gardner chose two different color ways to interpret them, one soft and naturalistic and one more jewel-toned and shimmery. The overall pattern is bold but subtle, recognizable at a deep level but also an easy-to-work-with abstraction.
Dunes is composed of Tibetan wool, twisted blends of wool and Chinese silk and pure Chinese silk to recall the look of water, water on sand and exposed sand.
